July’s tiny acts of defiance — the covert harvesting of pearl buttons from Caroline’s dress, for example — quickly mark her out as a hero who refuses to be crushed; the political climate is shifting, though, and as rebellion, abolition and the arrival of a new overseer (Jack Lowden) slowly change the rules, July finds herself in a disorientating new world.
