‘Ready Player One’ Photo Reveals First Look at Olivia Cooke as ‘Art3mis’

So far, nearly all of the limited marketing we’ve seen for Stephen Spielberg’s next big sci-fi movie, Ready Player One, has centered around the main kid, Wade Watts (played by Tye Sheridan, the young Cyclops from X-Men: Apocalypse). And also, Wade’s digital avatar named “Parzival”.

That’s not too unusual this early before the movie’s March 2018 release, but Ernest Cline’s original novel had several more characters than just Wade/Parzival, all of which were ignored in the first trailer in favor of a chaotic virtual-reality race involving a Tron light cycle and nothing from the book. But a new photo released through Empire has now shown somebody new.

The basic story of Ready Player One is set in a dystopian future where everyone spends their free time in a VR game called the OASIS to escape the terrible outside world, and things ramp up when the VR game’s creator dies and promises his vast fortune to anyone who can find his “easter egg” in the game. Those easter egg hunters include folks like Parzival and his rival, a more well known avatar named Art3mis.

In the movie, Art3mis will be played by Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), and she’s the focus of the newest photo. Check out the full image below:

For anyone who’s read the book – while Cline’s writing is sometimes criticized, the story itself is fun – there’s some odd implications that come along with this photo. While we’ll avoid spoilers, suffice it to say Art3mis is supposed to have something unusual about her physical appearance, and the character shown here is just a normal young woman in a Joy Division tank top (and a presumably haptic gaming vest).

But hey, they’ve already changed Wade Watts from his book version anyway, slimming down the overweight teen to fit into Tye Sheridan’s standard Hollywood physique. Changing Art3mis into a standard Hollywood character wouldn’t be too big of a stretch, although it’s still a shame.

A big theme from the book was the contrast between the heroes’ real selves and their digital avatars, something strikingly visual which’d be easy to pull off in the movie if Spielberg wanted to. But either Spielberg didn’t want to, or some executive put their foot down, or the marketing might be hiding much more than we thought, which is always possible.

Other characters who have yet to appear include the OASIS creator James Halliday (Mark Rylance from Bridge of Spies), a cocky easter egg hunter named i-R0k (T.J. Miller from Deadpool and Silicon Valley), and a villainous tech giant named Nolan Sorrento, played by Ben Mendelsohn – after Mendelsohn’s Rogue One role as the posh Imperial officer Orson Krennic, he’s seemingly getting typecast into yet another evil bureaucratic role.

Ready Player One comes out March 30, 2018.
