Get ready to go back to school



Back-to-school.(Photo: Getty Images/iStockphoto)As the summer winds down, back-to-school events begin, with two happening in Abilene this weekend:► At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Children’s Dentistry of Abilene will conduct a back-to-school bash at Adventure Cove, 2742 S. Ninth St. Prizes and photos will be available. Admission is free.► A back-to-school lock-in will begin at 11 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center, 1442 N. Second St. Doors will be locked from 11:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning. Registration is $10. Tractor pulls will begin at 7:30 p.m., with a DJ and karaoke starting at 8 p.m.The festival will continue Saturday with the 5K Watermelon Crawl at 7 a.m. in downtown De Leon, followed by a 42 tournament at Prado’s Cafe at 8 a.m. “Golden Saturday” will begin at 9 a.m. downtown, with events including a car show, seed spitting contest, vendors and live music. The carnival will open at 6 p.m., and a concert by Giovannie & The Hired Guns will begin at 9 p.m. with $10 admission. Mockingbird Lane.► “Ready Player One,” rated PG-13, will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at the south branch of the Abilene Public Library, in the Mall of Abilene.And more …► A grand opening ceremony of the Kirby Lake Nature Park will be presented at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Lake Kirby Park Pavilion, 5650 Maple St. Admission is free.► A free showing of “Wonder,” rated PG, will begin at 9 p.m. Friday at Sears Park.
